Our Story

putting our heads, hands, and hearts together

What do we mean “Your Favorite Very Small Winery”?  Well…we really mean we are “Striving to be Your Favorite Very Small Winery”.  We do that by making the very best wine possible, adding the unique touch of beautiful clay art, and providing lots of healthy space during your visit.

We don’t think anyone really enjoys big crowds, especially when trying to relax.  This certainly became evident after you started going out out again after the pandemic shutdown. The year 2020 will forever be embedded in our memory, but our hope is that we helped make that memory better for you through a relaxing visit to The Potter’s Vineyard enjoying beautiful art and wine.

Being very small also allows us (the winemakers) to talk to everyone as we strive to know your name and treat you just like we would want to be treated at a very small vineyard and tasting room.

Depending on your individual interests, we would love to talk with you about our LIVE Certified, Salmon Safe and Organic practices in the vineyard; or our uncompromising wine making practices; or even how we make our own art; or if you just want to relax on your own that’s great as well.  Our real goal is to leave you with a memorable experience that brings you and your loved ones closer together!

Of course none of this would be possible if we didn’t make great wine.  The wines from our vineyard have recently been scoring upwards of 95 points.  Another irony of the 2020 & 2021 years is that wines from our very small winery received an amazing 7 Gold Medals, even though most of the events that we submitted them to were cancelled (due to the pandemic).  All this from a winery that produces less than 1,000 cases annually.

Beautiful wines, vines and art in the gallery will make your visit enjoyable, safe and relaxing.  Appointments are every 1 hour and 15 minutes from 11 – 5 pm and we only book socially distanced tables to ensure there is space for you to stay.  Please book your appointment today (by clicking Tasting Reservation on the Home Page) – it will be great to see you again or for your very first visit.  Thanks for your support.

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark” Michelangelo.

Michelangelo has had a big influence on The Potter’s Vineyard.  It was after a trip to Italy in 2011 when Bill and Sandy saw Michelangelo’s work one day and the next day were in the home of Italian winemakers. It was not ironic that the next year Bill and Sandy met Laura Volkman, who’s premier wine club was named the ‘Michelangelo’ or M-club.

A partnership was formed where Laura taught Bill the 1,000 steps of growing and making premium Pinot Noir wine…the outcome of which is ‘this place’ where you can relax in the vineyard, savor the tastes, and learn all about it during your visit here.

From Tigard, Oregon, Bill and Sandy purchased Laura Volkman’s estate vineyard in September, 2012.  Bill brings his 30 year career in the nutritional sciences and Sandy provides the inspiration gained from her Italian heritage of good food and family dinners with wine made by her Grandfather.  Their passion for handcrafted old-world style wines will be in every bottle made from this limited production, boutique vineyard. Bill and Sandy can’t wait to welcome you home.

Art Roberts | Assistant Winemaker Consultant

Art began to take notice of wine in the 1970s, but only after splitting a case of early 70’s vintage Louis Martini red with his future wife in 1984, was he hooked.

Soon he discovered that big name wineries don’t always have the best wines or prices and that the smaller family-run wineries are where the wine is still made in small, affordable batches by people who care about quality.

Making wine with Bill and Sandy is not like the fantasy pictures on wine magazine covers. It’s labor intensive and complex; a fusion of hard work, science, and, truly, art.

Melinda is Bill and Sandy’s daughter. She is a Tasting Room Associate, who is a huge help at harvest.

Melinda enjoys trying new wine and was so excited when her parents bought the Vineyard.  She enjoys talking with people and hearing their excitement about our wine.

“This makes it simple for me to work at the tasting room and the winery pouring wine.  Throughout high school I was able to taste the wine dad was making – this got me used to tannins.  I like all the wine but I still remember how amazing a Cab can be when I tasted the first vintage at the winery – the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.” Her Dad is amazed at her sensory abilities to pick up even the subtle nuances of a very light Pinot bouquet.

Melinda is a Certified Nursing Assistant having worked in Covid-19 tracing and front line care.  She lives in SW Portland and looks forward to her visits to the Vineyard for a taste of the country.

Terra in our newest employee “the greeter”.  She is a Yellow English Lab that loves entertaining people with her tricks and leg rubs.  Ask Bill to help her show you her ‘roll over trick’ for a healthy treat.  She is working on her Master of Wine Bark and is in training to carry wine menus without eating them.

If you look closely you will notice the uncanny resemblance of Doug with our ‘vineyard worker’ logo image.  Doug depicts the essence of our vineyard with his amazing work ethic and ability to take on any task to keep the vineyard grounds looking beautiful, even hoeing the weeds by hand if needed.  Doug is a long-time wine club member who offered his help one day Bill told him how hard it was to find vineyard help.  You can find Doug in the vineyard or in the tasting room enjoying a flight with his dear wife Peggy.

Cindy is another long-time wine club member who recently joined our team.  Cindy has been working as a tasting room associate and knows and loves our wines very much, so when we needed help she was a perfect addition.  Look for her at special events or on a quiet day when she is studying up on the nuances of our Barrel 17 Select Estate Pinot Noir.
